Casbah, 2015).

To tip or not to tip this is the question?

Avoid the dreaded uncertainty of tipping while dining out

in Europe – brush up on local tipping customs so you

know how to make a graceful exit from the table.

Restaurant tips are more modest in Europe than in America.

In most places, 10% is a big tip. At restaurants, check the

menu to see if service is included; if it isn’t, a tip of 5–10

percent is normal.

At table-service restaurants, the tipping etiquette and

procedure vary slightly from country to country. But in

general, European servers are well paid, and tips are

considered a “bonus” — for exceptional service or for

simplicity in rounding the total bill to a convenient number.

In many countries, 5% to 10% is sufficient.

In Mediterranean countries, the “service charge” can be

handled in different ways. Sometimes the menu will note

that the service is included (servizio incluso), meaning that

the prices listed on the menu already have this charge built

in. When the service is not included (servizio non incluso),

the service charge might show up as a separate line item at

the end of your bill.¬

In northern and eastern Europe, the menu or bill is less

likely to address the “service charge,” but you can usually

assume that it’s included in the prices.

Virtually anywhere in Europe, you can do as the Europeans

do and (if you’re pleased with the service) add a euro or

two for each person in your party. Tipping is an issue only

at restaurants that have waiters and waitresses. If you order

your food at a counter, (in a pub for example) don’t tip.

Of course, each country has its own quirks when it comes

to tipping. In Paris and the rest of France: A 15% tip is

ALWAYS included in your bill, it’s a French law.

In Germanic countries, it’s considered

discreet and classy to say the total number of euros you’d

like the waiter to keep (including his tip) when paying. So,

if the bill is 41 euros, hand him 50 while saying, “45.”

You’ll get 5 euros back, and feel like a local. In Café’s the

server will ussally settle the bill at the table, calculate the

total, including the tip, and tell the server the total sum you

would like to pay. If you need more time to calculate, you

may leave the tip on the table, though this isn’t common

practice in outdoor cafes’

In Prague and most places in the Czech Republic, your bill

will state whether or not service is included. In most

cases it’s not, so round up the bill by adding 5% to 10% and

pay in cash. Speaking just a few Czech words will get

you better service (if you greet your waiter in English, he’ll

want a 15% tip).

In London many restaurants list a 12.5% “optional” tip on

the bill, but you should tip only what you feel the service

warrants.

Typically, it’s better to hand the tip to the waiter when

you’re paying your bill than to leave it on the table,

particularly in busy places where the wrong party might

pocket the change. Servers prefer to be tipped in cash even

if you pay with your credit card (otherwise the tip may

never reach your server); in many cases, there isn’t even a

line on the credit-card receipt for a tip.

Paris – France.
Paris is the capital and most populous city of France. Situated on the Seine River, in the north of the country, it is in the centre of the Île-de-France region, also known as the région parisienne. The City of Paris has a population of 2,273,305 inhabitants (January 2013), making it the fifth largest city in the European Union measured by the population within the city limits. Paris and its suburbs have a population of 12,292,895 inhabitants, making it the second or third largest metropolitan area in Europe, with London and Berlin, depending on the area measured.

Paris was founded in the 3rd century BC by a Celtic people called the Parisii, who gave the city its name. By the 12th century, Paris was the largest city in the western world, a prosperous trading centre, and the home of the University of Paris, one of the first in Europe. In the 18th century, it was the centre stage for the French Revolution, and became an important centre of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts, a position it still retains today.

The Paris Region has a GDP of €612 billion (US$760 billion) in 2012, ranking it as one of the wealthiest five regions in Europe; it is the banking and financial centre of France, and contains the headquarters of 30 companies in the Fortune Global 500. In 2013 the City of Paris received 29.3 million visitors, making it one of the world’s top tourist destinations.

Paris is the home of the most-visited art museums in the world, the Louvre, as well as the Musée d’Orsay, noted for its collection of French Impressionist art, and the Musée National d’Art Moderne, a museum of modern and contemporary art. The notable architectural landmarks of Paris include the Notre Dame Cathedral (12th century); Sainte-Chapelle (13th century); the Eiffel Tower (1889); and the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur on Montmartre (1914).

Paris is known for its fashion designers and the twice-yearly Paris Fashion Week, and for its haute cuisine, and three-star restaurants. Most of France’s major universities and Grandes écoles are located in Paris, as are France’s major newspapers, including Le Monde, Le Figaro, and Libération.

Paris is home to the association football club Paris Saint-Germain F.C. and the rugby union club Stade Français. The 80,000-seat Stade de France, built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, is located in Saint-Denis. Paris hosts the annual French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament on the red clay of Roland Garros. Paris played host to the 1900 and 1924 Summer Olympics, the 1938 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, and the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

The city is a major rail, highway, and air-transport hub, served by the two international airports Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly. Opened in 1900, the city’s subway system, the Paris Métro, serves 9 million passengers daily. Paris is the hub of the national road network, and is surrounded by three orbital roads: the Périphérique, the A86 motorway, and the Francilienne motorway in the outer suburbs.
